Description
Presenting an exceptional, original 1983 mixed-media assemblage by the acclaimed mid-century Chicago modernist and Institute of Design alumnus, James Garrett Faulkner (American, 1933–2010). Titled "Two Views of Capri at Night," this tactile, layered piece beautifully bridges the traditions of Dadaist collage and postwar American photographic experimentation.
The artwork features two vintage color postcards depicting the sun-drenched Italian island of Capri. In his signature whimsical style, Faulkner has artistically altered the composition, transforming the bright daytime Mediterranean skies into deep, starry nightscapes peppered with delicate constellations. The postcards are meticulously framed within hand-marbled paper borders and secured with flat-head metallic hardware studs onto a heavily textured backing of loose-weave hessian burlap and layered vintage paper ephemera.
The reverse features the artist’s authentic handwritten signature, date (© 1983), medium specification, and exact dimensions directly on the wooden backing panel. Housed in a clean, gallery-quality natural wood float frame, this piece offers outstanding texture, historical depth, and a beautifully nostalgic narrative for collectors of mid-century art and travel ephemera.
Artist Biography: James Garrett Faulkner (1933–2010)
James Garrett Faulkner was a highly regarded fixtures of the 20th-century Chicago art scene. He formalised his creative vision at the prestigious Institute of Design (ID) during the 1950s—the legendary American reincarnation of the New Bauhaus—where he studied directly under titan photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Faulkner went on to become an influential educator, teaching for decades at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
An insatiable world traveler, bibliophile, and collector, Faulkner dedicated over thirty years of his career to the art of collage and photo-assemblage. His works are celebrated for their clever narrative syntax, seamlessly blending physical artifacts, travel documents, postcards, and humor to investigate memory and history. Faulkner's work has been exhibited widely, including at prominent galleries like Corbett vs. Dempsey, and is held in permanent museum collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
