USA, ca. 1960s. A large abstract oil on canvas painting titled Window #14 by San Francisco based American artist Howard Hack (1932-2015). This painting is from Hack's "Window Series”, first exhibited at the De Young museum in 1967. The series depicts Hack's abstractions of scenes from the windows of San Francisco’s South of Market area, which at the time was slated for demolition and redevelopment. Hack appears to have intended to commemorate the soon to be vanished neighborhood with these large scale works, capturing a potent moment in American cultural history. Many paintings from this series are still held in the permanent collection of the San Francisco MOMA.
Both a painter and graphic artist, Hack's work defies easy classification. He was trained in traditional Flemish painting, living and working with avant-garde artists in the vibrant San Francisco art scene of the 1960's such as Jay DeFeo and Manuel Neri.
Vibrantly colored and masterfully executed. The surface displays large and sweeping craquelure that adds tremendous depth and honest patina. Original stretchers and frame are sturdy and in very good vintage condition. Fully signed with various original gallery labels to reverse.
Dimensions: 62” wide x 66” high x 3” deep.
