Lovely set of six hand-colored copperplate botanical engravings of medicinal plants from the celebrated 18th-century botanical encyclopedia A Curious Herbal by pioneering Scottish botanical artist Elizabeth Blackwell, originally published in London between 1737 and 1739. Blackwell famously created and sold the work to help free her husband from debtor’s prison, making it one of the most remarkable botanical publications ever produced by a woman.
Each print is signed “Eliz. Blackwell delin. sculp. et pinx.” and titled in both English and Latin:
• Plate 168 – White Ladies-Bed-Straw – Gallium album latifolium or Mollugo alba latifolia
• Plate 111 – White Henbane – Hyoscyamus Albus
• Plate 170 – Fluellin or Female Seedwell – Elatine or Veronica Foemina
• Plate 62 – Spurge Laurel – Laureola
• Plate 232 – Wall-Pepper or Stonecrop – Sedum minimum
• Plate 48 – Brook Lime – Anagallis aquatica Becabunga
Printed on antique laid paper, some sheets retain original watermarks visible when held to the light, confirming their age and authenticity.
