A magnificent restored Victorian antique square grand piano of exceptional presence and craftsmanship. This rare architectural instrument embodies the grandeur of 19th-century design, with a dramatic silhouette, richly detailed cabinetry, and a visually stunning interior harp and string structure.
An extraordinary mid-19th century square grand piano by J. Bauer & Co. of New York, believed to date to approximately 1855 according to accompanying historical correspondence from The Americana Institute in New York (dated 1949 and included with purchase).
This museum-worthy Civil War–era piano features monumental hand-carved Victorian scroll legs, richly figured wood veneer, an ornate carved music stand, and a beautifully preserved square grand form with remarkable architectural presence.
The piano presents beautifully both open and closed, showcasing warm wood tones, dramatic sculptural craftsmanship, and antique harp and stringwork beneath the hinged lid panels. Included is a coordinating antique piano stool that complements the piece beautifully.
An exceptional statement piece for:
• historic homes
• libraries and studies
• wineries
• boutique hotels
• luxury interiors
• film or photography staging
• collectors of Americana and decorative arts
Maker:
J. Bauer & Co., New York
Estimated Era:
Circa 1855
Included:
• Original 1949 historical correspondence from The Americana Institute
• Matching antique piano stool
Professionally restored and maintained approximately 10 years ago by a specialist piano technician, with the original technician’s business card still preserved inside documenting prior work and service history. The piano has remained carefully owned.
Following relocation, the piano may benefit from a light tuning adjustment, as is common after transport of fine acoustic instruments. Antique square grand pianos require specialized tuning knowledge today, making professionally maintained examples increasingly uncommon.
The interior components present beautifully, reflecting attentive long-term stewardship. This is not merely a decorative shell piece — it is a preserved historical instrument with remarkable visual and musical character.
An extraordinary acquisition for a collector, historic home, luxury interior, boutique hospitality space, music room, or film/theater design setting.
A little about the history.
A piece rich in historical charm, this piece was very deeply loved, with exceptionally meticulous attention to careful handling and delicacy, by the few tasteful, elegant connoisseurs whom have been graced by the privilege and honor of its magnificent presence and ownership. It feels like a story right out of a fairytale.
According to the prior owner and a specialist piano technician familiar with the instrument, the piano is believed to have traveled by ship from England around Cape Horn to San Francisco during its early history. Oral provenance associated with the instrument suggests it may even have connections to the circle and era of Johannes Brahms, though this has not been independently authenticated.
The piano was acquired from only its second known owner, who inherited it with a historic California ranch property purchased from a prominent early cattle ranching family. Its long stewardship history and preserved condition contribute to the remarkable sense of historical presence surrounding the piece.
