Hand-carved during the latter years of the 18th century, this charming sculpture depicts a young lad just finishing his morning swim. The sculptor exhibits here his mastery of human anatomy, at the same time capturing the innocence of the boy, who appears to be showing off a newly found treasure ~ perhaps a seashell ~ to a companion nearby. Sculpted from select French walnut, the lad is depicted seated on a boulder.
Circa 1790s, it is sold with a turned pediment base that was added in the 19th century.
