This is a striking matte royal blue art pottery ashtray/catchall dish designed by master Italian ceramicist Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011) for Raymor import company. Handcrafted in Florence, Italy, circa 1950s/1960s.
This piece features Fantoni’s signature brutalist-style with heavy-textured matte blue exterior wall contrasted by a semi-gloss pool of cobalt and deep blue drip-glaze in the well. The rim is minimally glazed, adding to the handmade character. The two deep-V cuts are not overtly for cigarettes, making it equally functional as an ashtray or a sculptural entry dish.
Hand-signed on the bottom: "Fantoni Italy for Raymor." It is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks, and no evidence of past use as an ashtray.
