A small Japanese wooden table with a powerful, simple silhouette, richly grained wood and a beautifully aged patina.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, width 52 cm, depth 27 cm.
This antique Japanese low table bears a handwritten inscription underneath, dated 25 September 1897, during the Meiji period. The second inscription appears to refer to use within a building or institution, possibly a dormitory or residence, adding an extra layer of historical character to the piece.
The construction is sober and strong: a rectangular top, four straight legs and lower crossbars. One side has been left open, suggesting that the piece was probably used as a small utility table rather than as a simple stool. The wood has a warm natural tone, with pronounced grain, darker signs of use and a beautifully weathered surface.
Today, this is a particularly stylish interior accent. Ideal as a low display table for ceramics, ikebana, a small plant or a sculptural object. Placed beside a sofa, in an entrance hall or on a low cabinet, it immediately brings the quiet strength of Japanese woodwork into the interior.
The table is sturdy and functional, with signs of use and patina consistent with age and use.
