A rare and masterfully crafted 19th-century armorial dish from the renowned atelier of Edmé Samson et Cie, Paris (Circa 1860). This piece is a masterful tribute to the 18th-century "Chinese Export" porcelain style, featuring a unique scalloped shell form that is as functional as it is decorative.
Details & Craftsmanship
The Design: The center features an intricate hand-painted coat of arms supported by two classical allegorical figures. The crest is surmounted by a noble’s coronet and surrounded by a delicate "Famille Rose" floral spray.
The Palette: A vibrant mix of iron-red, soft pinks, and emerald greens, finished with hand-applied gold-tooled accents along the scalloped rim.
Markings: The base features the characteristic iron-red pseudo-Oriental mark used by the Samson workshop in the mid-to-late 1800s.
Condition & Size
Size: Approximately 7" L x 4" W.
Condition: Good antique condition. Notable for faint staining in the deeper recesses of the shell form and gentle wear to the hand-painted decoration and gilded edges. These minor imperfections are typical of mid-1800s Samson production and do not detract from the display quality.
Versatility: While originally designed as a relish or spoon tray, its unique shape makes it a perfect jewelry catch-all for a nightstand, a desk accessory, or a standout addition to a transitional gallery wall.
Attributes & Authenticity
Maker: Attributed to Edmé Samson et Cie, Paris.
Era: Late 19th Century.
Note: This is a period-authentic reproduction by the Samson workshop, which is highly collectible in its own right for its superior 19th-century interpretations of historic porcelain. We provide all known markings and high-resolution photos to help you trace its journey into your home.
