Circa 1900, excellent condition. Tz’uchou (or Cizhou) ware is a famous style of traditional Chinese stoneware known for its bold, freehand brushwork, and is celebrated for its expressive, folk-art-inspired vitality. Originating in Northern China during the Song Dynasty (960–1279), it was traditionally made by coating coarse clay with a white slip and decorating it with vibrant black or brown motifs. This deity is often portrayed as riding on a black tiger. Chinese consider the tiger to be the king of the jungle, not the lion. This portrayal expresses this deity’s prowess over raw, untamed nature as he was said to have the ability to control thunder and lightning, ward off plagues and disasters, and generate wealth and treasure. This stoneware piece is 11” x 5.5” x 3.25” and weighs just over 3lbs. See less
