19th Century Dutch Shaving Table by Horrix, ca 1860 A panelled shaving table with a folding mirror. This piece of furniture consists of three parts: the base on three legs, the middle section with two side drawers, and the heavy top section with the mirror. The middle section is branded with the Horrix Brothers logo. Made partly of oak and stained cherry. Part is made of European cherry wood, sourced from Southern Europe, France. This piece of furniture was possibly commissioned by a wealthy client, just as the Dutch Royal House did during the reign of King William III. The history of the Horrix firm in The Hague is that of one of the most prominent 18th- and 19th-century furniture factories in the Netherlands. The company grew from a modest workshop to the largest furniture manufacturer of its time. The foundation was laid by the German immigrant Matthijs Horrix (1735-1806), who settled in The Hague around 1760. He opened a workshop on Spuistraat named 'In de Commode van Paris', (Paris chest of drawers) which indicated the French orientation of his designs. In 1850, the Horrix brothers (Matthieu Horrix Sr. (1815-1889) and Willem Horrix Sr. (1816-1881)) founded a new, larger furniture factory on Stationsweg/Westeinde, The Hague, which became known as the "Anna Paulowna Meubelen Fabriek" (furniture Factory). In 1856, the brothers were the first furniture factory in the Netherlands to have a steam engine. Due to their renowned quality, this factory grew into the largest furniture factory in the Netherlands. Matthijs and Willem's furniture was available in various historical styles, but their specialization was French-style furniture. 1850 – 1890 Furniture from this flourishing period bears an embossed brand mark or ink stamp. In total is the height 172 cm The middle part is 43,5 cm x 30,5 cm The legs are 50 cm wide from each other The total weight is approximately 16 kilos This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
