Large henri ii style buffet mirror or psyche, carved walnut, late 19th century
an elegant and imposing henri ii style mirror, crafted from richly carved walnut, dating from the late 19th century. This piece of cabinetmaking exemplifies the revival of the french renaissance aesthetic, highly prized during the second half of the 19th century.
the mirror is framed by a majestic architectural structure. The upper pediment is adorned with a substantial entablature carved with foliate motifs and a central shell, surmounted by two wings and three pear-shaped pinnacles, lending the whole a strong verticality and a monumental character. The beveled glass, likely original, is flanked on either side by superb twisted columns, finely carved with spiral fluting, resting on molded bases.
the lower section features a richly carved lower rail adorned with scrolling foliage and a central cartouche. Two small drawers, fitted with turned wooden pulls, are integrated on either side, adding discreet functionality to the piece. These drawers are also adorned with carved motifs on the front, echoing the overall ornamentation of the piece.
the quality of the carving and the depth of the walnut patina underscore the meticulous craftsmanship of this period. This mirror, with its size and distinctive style, was intended to grace a large dining room sideboard or serve as a cheval mirror in a late 19th-century bourgeois interior. It will bring a touch of history and grandeur to any classic or eclectic interior.
