Kōrin was born into a rich merchant family in Kyoto that owned a textile shop. After losing his family’s fortune, Kōrin made his living designing textiles, screens, lacquerware, and ceramics with his brother Kenzan. He is particularly famous for his screen paintings, lacquerwork, and textile designs.
Kōrin's artistic maturity began in 1697, and virtually all his important work was produced in the 20-year period after this. His first masterpiece was a screen representing autumn grasses and flowers, combining a fine sense of abstract decorative design and a close study of nature.

A Deer under a Maple-tree was first reproduced in the fourth volume of Kōrin Hyakuzu (One Hundred Paintings by Kōrin) in 1826, and later featured in the Japanese fine art publication Kokka (meaning 'Flowers of the Nation') in 1914
