A Match Striker made by the Shenango China Company, for the Texas Hotel Supply Company in Houston for use in the dining room and lobby of The Brazos Hotel, circa 1920s.
The Brazos Hotel was built in Houston, Texas in 1903, across the street from the Southern Pacific railroad station. It was razed in 1931 to make way for a new Southern Pacific station.
Shenango China, founded in 1901 in New Castle, Pennsylvania grew into one of America’s premier commercial and fine china manufacturers. Renowned for its durable hotel ware, “Castleton China,” and bespoke White House dinnerware.
The striker is printed in brown on white china, and shows a running acanthus leaf border and the crest used by the hotel.
The match holder has openings for accessing the rough strikers found on the sides of matchboxes, with an opening on the top side.
