Victorian Brass Coral & Sea Life Circular Mirror, England, Late 19th Century
This richly ornamented Victorian circular mirror exemplifies the era’s fascination with the natural sciences, maritime exploration, and the romance of the sea. Executed in cast brass with a warm, time-softened patina, the frame is conceived as a sculptural marine wreath encircling a circular glass plate.
The composition is densely modeled with a vivid array of sea life and coastal motifs, including prominent scallop shells, clam and cockle shells, a finely detailed sand dollar, seahorses, a crab, and a lobster or marine crayfish. These elements are interwoven with oak leaves and acorns—symbols of strength and endurance—creating a deliberate dialogue between land and sea that was especially resonant in late Victorian decorative arts.
The sculptural quality of the casting is notable, with crisp definition to the shells’ ribbing, the segmented forms of the crustaceans, and the delicate articulation of the seahorses’ curled tails. The layered relief gives the frame exceptional depth and visual movement, allowing light to play across the varied surfaces of brass and patina.
Measuring approximately 12 inches in overall diameter, with a 7-inch diameter mirror plate, this piece is intimate in scale yet visually commanding. The reverse retains its original woven wicker backing, consistent with 19th-century construction.
Both decorative and evocative, this mirror would be at home in a cabinet of curiosities, a coastal or maritime interior, or as a striking accent within an eclectic or traditional setting. A rare and highly expressive example of Victorian marine-themed metalwork.
