A refined mid-19th-century Bohemian ruby cut-to-clear crystal casket, crafted in the renowned glassmaking region of northern Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic), circa 1850–1875. During this period Bohemian workshops were celebrated across Europe for their richly colored overlay crystal and delicate wheel engraving, producing luxury objects for the Viennese, Parisian, and London decorative arts markets.
The casket is formed in an elegant faceted hexagonal shape, its architectural geometry created by sharply beveled crystal panels. The glass is executed in ruby overlay crystal, a technique in which a layer of deep red glass is fused over clear crystal and then carefully cut and engraved to reveal the transparent ground beneath.
The lid features a striking multi-point starburst cut, a classic Bohemian decorative motif designed to capture and refract light while emphasizing the brilliance of the crystal. Surrounding the star are finely engraved laurel sprays, lending the lid a graceful neoclassical character.
Each side panel is delicately engraved using traditional copper-wheel techniques, cutting through the ruby layer to reveal pale frosted decoration against the translucent red ground. The motifs include garland swags, floral medallions, and stylized botanical ornaments, including a charming panel depicting lily-of-the-valley, a symbol of purity and renewal frequently found in mid-19th-century decorative arts.
The interior continues the decorative program with engraved wreath and floral motifs visible through the luminous ruby crystal, creating layered visual depth when illuminated.
The box retains its original gilt bronze mounts and hinge, which frame the crystal panels and provide structural support while adding elegant contrast to the richly colored glass.
There is visible surface wear to the underside from age and use, consistent with a functional jewel casket of this period. This wear does not detract from the beauty or display quality of the piece.
Elegant and luminous, this casket is a beautiful example of mid-19th-century Bohemian luxury crystal, reflecting the refined craftsmanship and decorative sophistication that made Bohemian glass among the most sought-after in Europe.
