This powerful and sculptural fragment is a monumental Buddhist aureole (halo) originally mounted behind the head and upper torso of a large-scale Buddha sculpture. Measuring 36.5 inches high by 26 inches wide, the piece would have belonged to a life-size or larger devotional figure, likely installed in a temple or monastery shrine in East or Southeast Asia, most plausibly China or the greater Sino-Buddhist cultural sphere.

The composition unites two symbolic halo forms. The arched upper nimbus is carved in openwork and centered with three seated Buddhas arranged in a triangular configuration, an iconography associated with the Trikāya (Three Bodies of the Buddha) or the Buddhas of Past, Present, and Future. These figures float amid swirling cloud motifs, a visual metaphor for transcendence and the immaterial nature of enlightenment. Below, the broad oval mandorla features dense, rhythmic relief and a perimeter of radiating flame forms, symbolizing the Buddha’s wisdom and spiritual energy emanating outward into the world.

Executed in cast metal with hand-worked refinement, the surface displays deliberate textural variation designed to catch and animate light. The dark, time-softened patina reflects ritual age and devotional use. The lower cut-out indicates its original integration around the shoulders or back of the Buddha figure.

Preserved as an independent sculptural relic, this aureole fragment functions today as a commanding object of spiritual abstraction—equally compelling as a work of Buddhist material culture or as a dramatic architectural statement in a contemporary interior.
