Italian Grand Tour Bronze “Porcellino” Boar After Pietro Tacca, Florence, Late 19th Century
A finely cast Italian Grand Tour bronze reduction of the celebrated Florentine “Porcellino,” after the 17th-century model by Pietro Tacca, itself inspired by an ancient Roman copy of a Hellenistic Greek boar. This cabinet-scale sculpture captures the animal in a poised, alert stance, its head lowered and body subtly tensed, conveying both naturalism and latent energy.
The surface is richly worked with deeply chased, rhythmic striations to suggest the boar’s coarse hide, highlighted by warm golden undertones and areas of natural verdigris, enhancing depth and visual movement. The figure rests on an integral naturalistic plinth, echoing the marshy base of the Florentine original while simplified for Grand Tour production.
Such bronzes were produced in Florence and Rome during the 19th century as souvenirs for cultivated travelers, symbolizing engagement with classical antiquity and Renaissance revival. The subject traditionally alludes to the Calydonian Boar of Greek mythology, representing strength, ferocity, and the triumph of man over nature.
A sculptural object of enduring appeal, equally suited to desk, vitrine, or library display.
