Pair of Russian Empire Brass Candlesticks with Drip Basins, circa 1790–1835
A substantial and finely proportioned pair of Russian Empire–period brass candlesticks, dating to the late 18th to early 19th century. Each example is executed in a restrained Neoclassical idiom, characterized by a tall, turned baluster column rising from a broad circular base fitted with an integral drip basin. The form reflects the Russian adaptation of Western Neoclassicism during the late Catherine the Great and early Alexander I periods, interpreted through a distinctly utilitarian and durable lens.
The candlesticks are constructed in multiple components, with the column (or throat) threaded and screwed directly into the base, a period-correct technique commonly employed in Russian brasswork of the era. This method allowed for efficient casting, lathe finishing, and long-term maintenance, while also enabling the substantial weight and stability evident here. The crisp turning rings visible throughout the stem and base were finished on a lathe after casting, a hallmark of traditional workshop production rather than later industrial manufacture.
Each candlestick retains a deep, naturally developed patina, with evidence of long use visible in the candle cups and drip basins, including wax erosion and gentle heat oxidation. These features contribute to the authenticity and surface character of the pair and have been intentionally preserved.
Such candlesticks would have been used in merchant-class or provincial domestic interiors within the Russian Empire, and examples of this type are also associated with Sabbath and household ceremonial use. Their sober elegance, weight, and scale make them particularly versatile for both traditional and modern interiors.
