Polished & Patinated Brass Noughts and Crosses (Tic-Tac-Toe) Game by Sarreid, Mirror-Back, circa 1970s
A sculptural mid-century tabletop game by Sarreid Ltd., executed in solid brass with a contrasting polished and patinated finish. The square grid—measuring approximately 8 inches—is raised and crisply cast, accompanied by five “X” and five “O” playing pieces, each with a softly aged surface that enhances their tactile presence.
This example is distinguished by its mirror-backed construction, visible beneath the open grid. Unlike the more common all-brass Sarreid versions, which rely solely on metal for visual weight, the mirrored ground introduces reflection and depth—lightening the composition and giving the illusion that the pieces float within the grid. It is a subtle but important variation that elevates the piece from a simple game to a decorative object.
The contrast between polished brass highlights and naturally patinated recesses is characteristic of Sarreid’s 1970s production, reflecting a broader design movement that favored hand-finished surfaces and Old World materiality within modern forms. The slightly darkened “O” rings further enhance this contrast, providing visual distinction against the brighter crosses.
Known in Britain as noughts and crosses and in the United States as tic-tac-toe, the game itself dates back to antiquity, with early grid-based examples found in Roman contexts. Its enduring simplicity made it an ideal subject for reinterpretation during the 20th century, particularly in luxury desk and cocktail table accessories.
A functional game and decorative accent in equal measure—ideal for a cocktail table, desk, or library setting.
