Pair of John Dickinson Style Faux Bois Demilune Consoles, American, Late 20th Century
Striking pair of sculptural demilune consoles in the manner of John Dickinson, each featuring heavily textured faux bois lacquer surfaces and raised on an unusual tripartite base composed of stylized deer legs. The organic silhouettes and hand-worked surfaces closely reflect the celebrated San Francisco School aesthetic associated with Dickinson’s iconic plaster and faux bois furnishings of the 1970s.
Each console is constructed with a demi-lune top having a deeply textured lacquer finish imitating carved and weathered wood grain. The tops are supported by three tapering zoomorphic legs terminating into a conforming pedestal base, creating a visually light yet highly architectural profile. The combination of primitive-inspired form and sophisticated material treatment gives the pair a strong sculptural presence suitable for both modernist and eclectic interiors.
The intentionally distressed cream-toned lacquer surface reveals areas of darker underlayer throughout, emphasizing the handcrafted texture and reinforcing the organic character of the design. Particularly notable is the deeply modeled edge treatment along the tops, recalling hand-carved burlwood or eroded natural timber.
Their narrow demi-lune form makes them highly versatile as console tables, pier tables, or dramatic entryway furnishings. Equally compelling placed flanking a doorway, beneath mirrors, or anchoring a large-scale interior.
Faux bois is a French term meaning “false wood” or “imitation wood.” In decorative arts and furniture, it refers to any technique used to make another material imitate the appearance, texture, or character of real wood. The effect can range from highly realistic bark simulation to abstract interpretations.
An uncommon and highly decorative pair capturing the spirit of John Dickinson’s celebrated blend of modernism, surrealism, and organic form.
