This striking large-scale pair of French gilt bronze sabots (protective furniture mounts) dates to the turn of the 20th century and reflects the continued popularity of Louis XV and Louis XVI revival ornament in Belle Époque interiors. Designed to sheath and protect the lower terminals of carved wooden legs, these mounts transform functional hardware into sculptural embellishment.
Each example is cast in substantial bronze and finely chased, combining a stylized hoof-form base with bold, upward-flaring acanthus leaves rendered in high relief. The acanthus—long associated with classical architecture and decorative arts—symbolizes enduring life and artistic refinement, while the hoof profile suggests animal vitality and movement, a motif frequently employed in Rococo and Neoclassical furniture.
The casting exhibits strong definition, with crisply articulated veining in the leaves and carefully tooled interior contours. The warm, mellow gilt surface shows natural variation and subtle oxidation consistent with age, enhancing the depth of the relief. The interior cavities reveal the mounts were designed to slide over or attach to substantial carved legs, likely for fauteuils, bergères, consoles, or case pieces requiring dramatic termination.
At 6 inches in height, this pair is notably larger than typical sabots, suggesting use on an important or architecturally scaled piece of furniture. Their sculptural presence also allows them to function independently today as decorative objects, bookends, or imaginative design elements in contemporary interiors.
A fine example of French decorative bronze work from circa 1900, embodying craftsmanship, ornament, and the enduring appeal of classical form.
