Description
This is a superb and rare Ming dynasty (1368–1644) Fahua (Fa-hua) ware globular jar/vase, 16th–17th century, featuring the classic cloisonné-style technique that makes these pieces so highly sought after by collectors and interior designers. Raised slip outlines create bold compartments filled with luminous alkaline glazes on a rich, deep cobalt-blue ground — accented with vibrant turquoise, emerald green, golden yellow, white, and subtle blue details.
Key Features
Form: Impressive bulbous guan shape with short waisted neck, everted rim, wide mouth, and low spreading foot. A substantial decorative presence.
Dimensions: 12.5 inches high × 13.25 inches wide (nearly identical in scale to the Sotheby’s comparable).
Decoration: Central register shows two vividly colored birds (one predominantly yellow with green accents, the other blue-green) perched on flowering branches amid yellow and white blossoms, green foliage, and stylized blue rockwork — classic auspicious bird-and-flower motifs symbolizing harmony, longevity, and prosperity. Upper frieze of green-and-blue ruyi/cloud scrolls; lower register with dynamic green wave-and-rock border. Neck and shoulder feature additional green-and-yellow cloud/scroll motifs.
Condition
Good original condition — intact with no major cracks, no restorations, and no flaking. There are some cracks with the expected minor surface wear and patina on the unglazed biscuit rim interior consistent with centuries of careful storage. The enamels remain brilliantly saturated and the raised outlines crisp throughout. This example is in noticeably good condition.
Provenance & Market Context
From a private collection. For reference, a very similar Ming dynasty Fahua jar (height 13¼ in. / 33.6 cm — almost exactly the same size) with an old restoration to a body crack sold at Sotheby’s in November 2022 for 18,900 GBP (approximately $23,000–$25,000 USD at the time).
This jar/vase appears to be in better condition, features the equally desirable bird-and-flower motif, and represents an exceptional value at $7,800.
Fahua wares were produced in the Jingdezhen and Shanxi kilns and were highly prized for temple, palace, and scholarly use. This striking jar would make a dramatic statement on a console, mantel, or in a curated Asian art collection. See less
