This watercolor captures an idealized 18th-century European aristocratic scene. Here is a game of mixed doubles in full court attire, complete with wigs and corsets. They're playing battledore and shuttlecock, two games that merged into modern badminton. Their sport takes place in a lush garden with a grandiose, overgrown classical colonnade draped with climbing vines and flowering shrubbery. This type of architectural park backdrop was heavily inspired by the works of Rococo masters like Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Jean-Antoine Watteau.
The romantic, soft washes in this work reflect the Late 19th-century Neo-Rococo or "Belle Époque" style, which looked back nostalgically to the pre-revolutionary French court life. Artists like Mariano Alonso Pérez and Eugène Grivaz often portrayed such historical garden parties to highlight elaborate fashion, elegant figures, and ornate landscapes—before "Madame la Guillotine" cut short such courtly pastimes during the French Revolution (1789–1799).
