This is an antique Victorian-style coal box or scuttle, sometimes referred to as a purdonium. These cabinets features a inlaid top, and a pull-down front door with a unique brass handle for accessing coal.
I'm not 100% sure what the wood this is made out of, but typically these are made from walnut, mahogany or even rosewood.
Originally this was designed to stylishly store coal near a fireplace, today it can be used as shoe storage, or just something beautiful to decorate your room.
