This elegant full-length portrait presents a seated female figure in a natural landscape setting, rendered with refined sensitivity and detail. Draped in layered garments that suggest both indigenous traditions and subtle european influence, the composition reflects the cultural encounters that defined late 18th-century exploration. The calm, direct pose and carefully observed costume give the image a strong decorative presence, while also serving as an important early ethnographic record of the pacific northwest coast. The original drawing was made by gaspard duché de vancy, one of the official artists on la pérouse’s expedition (1785–1788), and later refined by j.m. Moreau before being engraved for publication. The plate appeared in the official atlas to *voyage de la pérouse autour du monde* (1797–1798), one of the most important scientific and exploratory publications of the enlightenment period. Works from this atlas are highly regarded for their combination of artistic quality and documentary significance, capturing regions and cultures that were largely unknown to european audiences at the time. This particular engraving stands out for its strong vertical composition and intimate focus on a single figure, making it especially well-suited for framing and interior display. The fine linework and tonal variation of the copper engraving technique are clearly visible, highlighting textures of fabric, fur, and landscape elements with remarkable precision. A desirable piece for collectors of exploration history, ethnographic imagery, and pacific northwest material, as well as those seeking a refined and historically engaging decorative print. Condition: good antique condition with age-related toning, light foxing, and some faint staining in the margins. The sheet retains wide margins and a strong, clean impression overall. Framing tips: this print displays beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or off-white mat, emphasizing the vertical composition and creating a balanced, museum-quality presentation. A slightly deeper mat enhances the sense of depth and elegance. Note: the print is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
