These plates reflect the scholarly ambition of the Enlightenment, presenting classical antiquity through a systematic visual language combining architecture, archaeology, and iconography. The first engraving is densely composed with circular temple forms, medallions, and architectural motifs, including a prominent domed structure identified as Laurus, surrounded by a wide array of coin-like temple representations and symbolic designs. The composition reflects the comparative method of Montfaucon, bringing together references from various classical sources and earlier antiquarians such as Vaillant, Spon, and Beger. The second engraving presents a striking combination of friezes, medallions, and architectural fragments, including dynamic scenes of Roman figures in procession and combat, as well as a finely engraved domed temple structure and ground plan. The inclusion of archaeological ruins and decorative bands adds visual rhythm and narrative interest, offering insight into both ceremonial and architectural aspects of Roman culture. Together, these two plates form a cohesive and intellectually engaging set, united by their focus on temple iconography, symbolic representation, and antiquarian research. The balance between architectural clarity and decorative density makes this pair particularly appealing for collectors of classical material, as well as for interiors seeking a refined scholarly aesthetic. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning, light foxing, and minor surface wear consistent with early 18th-century paper. Edges show light handling wear, with visible plate marks and generous margins preserved. Overall, the impressions remain strong and visually attractive. Framing tips: This pair works beautifully displayed side by side or stacked vertically. We recommend dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats to enhance contrast and emphasize the fine engraved details. A museum-style presentation will highlight both the architectural forms and decorative elements. Note: The print is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
