Executed in dark stained beechwood, the design combines traditional Central European chairmaking with the emerging functional language of early modernism.

The chairs feature elegantly arched spindle backs, moulded solid wood seats, and finely turned front legs, creating a restrained yet highly architectural silhouette. Their proportions and construction reflect Josef Frank’s characteristic balance between comfort, practicality, and visual lightness.

This particular model carries significant architectural provenance. Adolf Loos selected the B 946 chair for the kitchen of Villa Müller in Prague, one of the defining works of European modern architecture and a landmark of Loos’ spatial and material philosophy. Josef Frank himself also used the model within the library of his own apartment, further reinforcing its importance within the development of Austrian modernist interiors.

Both chairs retain their original Thonet factory brand impressed into the wood as well as the original Thonet paper labels, confirming their authenticity and period manufacture.

Condition

Presented in good vintage condition with a rich aged patina to the dark stained beechwood. Structurally sound and stable. Surface wear and minor signs of age consistent with careful long-term use. Original factory markings and paper labels preserved. This piece has an attribution mark,
