The chairs have … Read more A fine antique Regency mahogany set of 8 dining chairs, comprising 6 single chairs and 2 carvers. The chairs have elegant curved top rails, finely shaped backs and decorative scroll detail, with the carvers having strong sweeping arms and classic Regency scroll terminals.
The mahogany has a good warm colour and the design is very smart, with turned front legs and sabre back legs giving the chairs a light but elegant profile. The green upholstered seats work well with the timber and give the set a fresh country house look.
Dining chairs of this period were made for formal dining rooms, where comfort and elegance were equally important. The shaped backs and open scrollwork are typical of Regency taste, influenced by classical design and refined cabinetmaking.
