Founded in the late nineteenth century, the firm produced sectional bookcases of documented quality and consistency that have become among the most collected American furniture forms of the early twentieth century. This two-section example, Pattern 112 Grade 598, Standard D-12¼ Unit, is a fully documented Globe-Wernicke piece carrying its original interior label.

The sectional bookcase was Globe-Wernicke’s defining contribution to American furniture design — a modular system that allowed individual stacking units to be added or removed as a library grew, each section complete in itself with its own lift-and-slide glass door mechanism. The lift-and-slide door — which raises and slides back into the unit rather than swinging outward — is the Globe-Wernicke signature, a practical and elegant solution that protects books while keeping the bookcase footprint consistent regardless of how many sections are stacked. Both sections of this example retain their glass doors and lift mechanisms.

The unit consists of two stacking sections, a top cap with rolled front edge, and a separate straight-leg base — the standard Globe-Wernicke configuration. The dark finish is consistent with the mahogany-toned production that represented the firm’s upper quality grades. The original paper label inside the upper section identifies the pattern, grade, unit depth specification, and Cincinnati origin — a level of documentation that distinguishes this piece from the many unmarked or misattributed barrister bookcases in the current market.
