This striking vintage lithograph poster celebrates Marc Chagall and his legendary ceiling commission for the Paris Opéra, one of the most celebrated public art projects of the 20th century. Created after Chagall’s colorful 1964 ceiling for the Palais Garnier in Paris, the poster captures the dreamlike imagery and lyrical floating figures that made the artist internationally renowned. The composition references the fantastical world of music, theater, and ballet that Chagall brought to the historic opera house when he was commissioned by French Minister of Culture André Malraux to redesign the ceiling above the grand auditorium.
Rendered in Chagall’s unmistakable palette of luminous blues, yellows, and reds, the image depicts a winged figure floating above the Paris Opera alongside poetic architectural forms and a crescent moon. The French inscription reproduced in the artwork translates approximately to: “I wished, like those today, to offer to Garnier a homage that would remain faithful to him.” The text reflects Chagall’s desire to honor architect Charles Garnier and the enduring spirit of the Opéra de Paris through a modern artistic vision.
The original ceiling itself became instantly iconic upon its unveiling in 1964, covering more than 2,400 square feet and paying tribute to great composers including Mozart, Debussy, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi. Chagall’s vibrant modernism caused controversy at first within the ornate 19th-century opera house, but it has since become one of the defining visual features of the Palais Garnier and one of Paris’s most beloved artistic landmarks.
This lithograph poster beautifully captures that important moment in modern art and French cultural history, making it a wonderful decorative piece for collectors of Chagall, opera memorabilia, and mid-century European graphic art. Please note that there were varying sizes of this poster produced and this appears to be the largest.
