Pair of 19th C Antique Mughal Bronze Ewer Deccani Swan Hamsa

Aquamanile.


Ewers are in the Shape of Geese / Swans, Mughal India or the Deccan Empire, 19th century.


The bronze birds are likely swans(hamsa), which are the vehicles of the Hindu god, Brahma.

The dragon-head spouts and handles are adapted from Timurid prototypes, but the spouts are closer to a crocodile's head.


The spiral fluting is characteristic of cast vessels of this period from the Indian subcontinent.


The bodies appear engraved with stylized feathers.


Despite the Islamization of the greater part of northern India and the Deccan between 1192 and the early 16th century, and later in the wake of the Mughal conquest of 1526, the vast majority of the population remained Hindu. This might account for the persistence of zoomorphic vessels; not only are the figural elements in Hindu sculpture extremely rich but certain animals and birds played the role of vehicles for the gods and were evidently adapted by craftsmen working for Muslim patrons.


These beauties were sourced from an antique store in Palm Springs, CA.


They show much age and patina. No attempts to polish were made.

Approx 11” tall each.
