A stunning vintage Japanese four-panel Kin Byōbu (folding gold screen) depicting a traditional autumnal scene. Hand-painted on a shimmering gold leaf ground, the composition features vibrant white chrysanthemums (Kiku)—symbolizing longevity—and fiery maple leaves (Momiji) set against a minimalist horizon.
The Details
The screen is finished with a traditional black lacquer frame and a patterned silk brocade border. It is signed by the artist 永逢 (Ei-hō) on the lower left panel. Notably, this piece features ornate brass "Cloud" style hangers on the top rail, indicating it was designed for wall-mounting as a focal point in a mid-century or modern interior, though it can also stand independently in a classic zigzag fold.
Flora:
Chrysanthemums (Kiku): The large white flowers are symbols of longevity, rejuvenation, and the Japanese Imperial family.
Maple (Momiji): The branch with orange and yellow leaves represents the peak of autumn and the "changing of the seasons."
Bamboo & Grasses: These represent resilience and flexibility.
Background: The surface is likely gold leaf (or high-quality gold-colored silk/paper), intended to reflect ambient light and "brighten" a room—a functional use dating back to dark, candle-lit Japanese castles.
Signature & Markings
Signature: The two characters on the far left panel (bottom) appear to be 永逢 (Ei-hō / Nagayoshi). This is the artist's name or a studio name.
Label: The fragment of the label on the back (Image 1) says "MADE IN JAPAN" with a logo that includes "BF". This confirms it was produced for international export, likely in the 1950s–1970s.

There is minor chipping and age-related wear to the black lacquer on the frame edges and reverse, which does not detract from the frontal display. Traditional paper hinges are fully functional. less
