Sumi Stallion*
Virginia Cohn Parkum, c. Unknown
Sumi Stallion distills the essence of the horse into a handful of fluid, calligraphic strokes, demonstrating Parkum’s deep sensitivity to gesture, breath, and movement. Executed in the spirit of sumi ink painting, the work abandons descriptive realism in favor of expressive economy. The animal is not rendered through detail but conjured through motion: a lifted foreleg, an arcing neck, and the forward sweep of the body emerge from brush marks that feel both deliberate and spontaneous.
The composition balances strength and lightness. Broad, saturated strokes anchor the stallion’s mass, while attenuated lines taper into airy trails, suggesting speed, balance, and the fleeting nature of presence. The brushwork retains visible variations in pressure and ink saturation, allowing each stroke to record the artist’s hand in real time. This immediacy transforms the image into an event rather than an illustration.
A small red seal stamp anchors the composition, reinforcing the work’s dialogue with East Asian ink traditions and affirming the painting as both image and mark. The restrained use of red—echoed subtly near the head—introduces a pulse of vitality, like breath entering an otherwise monochrome field.
Rather than depicting a specific horse, Parkum captures the stallion as archetype: power contained within grace, motion suspended in stillness. The open field surrounding the figure is not empty but active, functioning as space through which the animal moves and as silence against which gesture becomes meaningful.
In its elegant reduction, Sumi Stallion becomes a meditation on energy, presence, and the expressive potential of a single, unbroken line.
