Early 20th Century Japanese Four-Fold Byobu Screen with Cranes and Young Bamboo
Description
This elegant early 20th-century Japanese four-fold byōbu (folding screen) is a classic example of traditional decorative screen painting. Rendered in ink, mineral colors, and shimmering gold leaf on paper, the front features two graceful cranes standing amid young bamboo reeds. The luminous gold-leaf background creates a radiant, light-filled effect that beautifully captures the serene aesthetic of late Edo to early Meiji period decorative arts.
In Japanese culture, cranes symbolize longevity, fidelity, and good fortune, while young bamboo represents resilience and strength. Together, they form a highly auspicious motif often commissioned for affluent homes, tea rooms, or ceremonial spaces. The reverse side is finished in a deep indigo-blue paper — standard for authentic period byōbu — allowing the screen to function as a handsome room divider from either direction.
Constructed in the traditional manner, the screen consists of four lightweight wooden lattice panels covered on both sides with multiple layers of strong washi paper, creating a dense yet flexible surface. Hand-applied gold leaf covers the painted side, and lacquer rails frame the perimeter for added strength and a refined finish. The zigzag folding design makes it freestanding or wall-mountable, and it closes compactly for storage.
