This 1960s Labba is a traditional, bowl-shaped carrying and storage basket crafted by the Tinguian (Itneg) tribe of the Cordillera region in Northern Luzon, Philippines. Primarily used by women, it serves as a lightweight and highly durable container for transporting farm produce, vegetables, and rice. It features a unique spiral plaited design where the base starts as a square but seamlessly transitions into a symmetrical round rim at the top. It's designed for agricultural efficiency, the square-to-round transition gives the basket stability when set on the ground, while the shape allows it to comfortably rest on the head or hip during transport. Handwoven using locally sourced, durable forest materials like bamboo and rattan. Although they are still used in the remote regions they are becoming more difficult to find and are sought after by collectors. It's in excellent condition.
