Description
Overview
An exquisite mid-20th-century French Post-Impressionist oil on canvas painting depicting the French Riviera at "Plage à Cros-de-Cagnes" by renowned artist Suzanne Eisendieck (1908–1998). Known for her vibrant depictions of Parisian high society, ballet dancers, and coastal scenes, Eisendieck captures a sun-drenched, bustling summer day on the French Riviera. The artwork comes housed in its magnificent, highly detailed vintage ornate gilt gesso frame with a classic fabric liner.
Composition & Style
The painting showcases Eisendieck’s celebrated signature style, using short, rhythmic, pointillist-infused brushstrokes that create an energetic, shimmering texture. In the foreground, a stylish young girl in a red-and-white striped dress and a wide-brimmed hat sits elegantly on the sand, surrounded by chic sunbathers lounging under vibrant, multi-colored umbrellas. Tall masts flying the French tricolor flag flutter against a soft, atmospheric sky, while the deep blue Mediterranean water laps onto the shore.
Condition & Presentation
The oil painting is in excellent vintage condition with rich, beautifully preserved pigments and no paint loss. The heavy, ornate gold frame exhibits a beautiful aged patina with minimal wear, complementing the Impressionist style and making it ready to hang immediately in an elegant living room, entryway, or coastal estate.

Suzanne Eisendieck (1908–1998)
Suzanne Eisendieck was a highly celebrated 20th-century German-born Post-Impressionist painter associated with the School of Paris. Renowned for her vibrant, joyous depictions of French high society, coastal life, elegant ladies, and ballet dancers, she became one of the few female artists of her era to achieve international acclaim and commercial success.
Early Life and Artistic Education
Eisendieck was born in Danzig, Germany (now Gdańsk, Poland) on November 14, 1908. She showed a remarkably precocious talent, becoming one of the youngest pupils of the acclaimed painter Fritz August Pfuhle at just 12 years old.
Berlin State Academy: At age 21, she moved to Berlin to study at the Berlin State Academy for Fine and Applied Arts under professor Maximilian Klewer.
First Break: During her time in Berlin, she staged her very first successful art exhibitions, building a quiet foundation for her craft.
Arrival in Paris and Rise to Fame
In 1932, driven by a passion to immerse herself in the heart of the modern art world, Eisendieck moved to Paris. Family accounts note that she arrived at the Gare de l'Est station with practically nothing to her name—reputedly having only 300 francs.
Despite her financial hardships, her fortune changed when she presented her work to the renowned Galerie Zak on the Left Bank. The gallery immediately recognized her genius and mounted her first solo exhibition in 1932. Her unique execution caught the eye of the Parisian public and prominent dealers, leading to consistent exhibitions at the prestigious Salon des Indépendants starting in 1929.
The Artistic Dynamic with Dietz Edzard
While carving out her path in Paris, Eisendieck met fellow German-born artist Dietz Edzard (1893–1963). The pair shared a deep affinity for French Impressionism, capturing the ultimate peak of French glamour and mid-century elegance. They married in 1938 and established a prominent creative partnership on the Parisian Left Bank.
Their artistic styles were so harmoniously aligned, utilizing similar short, fluttering pointillist strokes, that contemporary viewers occasionally struggled to tell their paintings apart. Together, they raised two daughters, Christine and Angélica, who both went on to lead highly creative careers in film and cultural heritage.
Signature Style and Subject Matter
Eisendieck’s work stands out immediately for its tremulous, quivering brushwork that diffuses hard lines and creates a glittering, soft-focus atmospheric texture. Her color choices are defined as a harmonious symphony of pastel pinks, soft tans, muted greys, and crisp whites punctuated by vibrant pops of color.
Her primary artistic motifs centered around the lighter, joyful moments of leisure:
Elegant, wide-eyed women attending masquerades, balls, or the circus.
Strolling figures in lush, manicured Parisian gardens.
Children, mothers, and sunbathers relaxing on the beaches of the French Riviera and Normandy coast.
Legacy and Provenance
Suzanne Eisendieck painted continuously and brilliantly until her passing in Paris in 1988. She secured a global footprint during her lifetime, staging high-profile solo and joint exhibitions across major art markets including London, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Palm Beach.
Today, her paintings are highly sought after by collectors, particularly in the United States, and are prominently represented in prestigious private and institutional collections across the globe.
