It originates from Turkey and popularized in the 1970s. This vase is a prime example of a blend of 18th Century Venetian techniques and Turkish craftmanship. Its heavy bottom is balanced with a narrow, slim neck. Now, the cool thing I discovered about this is why it is called a “Nightengale Eye.” The process involved in creating the intricate and delicate stripes is arranging, melting, and twisting fine threads of blue and white glass into the body, which forms a swirling “eye” pattern that resembles a nightingale’s eye. How gorgeous is that?!? This method was pioneered by Mehmed Dede, who was a Mevlevi dervish sent by Sultan Selim III to Venice to study their famous glassmaking techniques. Upon his return to Turkey, he set up shop and infused Venetian vetro a fili methods with Ottoman styles. It is in excellent condition. Put this in your cart so you can blow everyone away with this Mediterranean marvel. See less
