This pair of artworks consists of two antique painted architectural panels featuring dynamic, neoclassical depictions of ancient Greco-Roman marine monsters. Like the previous panels discussed, these were designed as interior inserts (such as overdoor transoms or panel fragments) and are rendered on a distressed, sage-green ground with heavily oxidized dark borders.
The panels depict figures commonly found in a Marine Thiasos, a mythical procession of sea-gods, nymphs, and chimeric creatures:Top Panel (The Ichthyocentaur or Marine Centaur): This creature features the upper torso of a human woman, the forelegs of a horse, and a long, winding serpentine fish tail. In classical mythology, ichthyocentaurs were peaceful sea-gods associated with ocean depths and sea foam.Bottom Panel (The Capricorn or Sea-Goat): This panel displays a classic Sea-Goat (Aigokeros), showing the front half of a horned goat combined with a coiled aquatic tail. It represents both the astrological symbol for Capricorn and a standard companion creature to the god Poseidon in ancient art.
