c. 1910s-1920s; Manhattan Show Case Co. - New York, NY (345 Canal St.)
Large-scale oak retail display case with slanted glass front, glass sides, and inset glass top, designed for merchandising small goods in a dry goods or haberdashery setting. The interior is fitted with green felt backing and a series of graduated metal wire dividers mounted to removable sliding trays, allowing for organized presentation of items such as collars, cuffs, or packaged goods. Two pull-out writing shelves sit beneath the display window, each with a small brass pull, providing workspace for clerks. Below, a bank of wide drawers offers substantial storage, each fitted with period brass hardware.
The case retains its original manufacturer's plaque for Manhattan Show Case Co., New York, and features integrated interior lighting with visible early electrical components mounted beneath the upper frame. The warm oak grain shows prominently across the case, particularly along the angled interior shelf and drawer fronts. The overall construction reflects a purpose-built retail fixture-substantial, efficient, and visually commanding-intended for high-traffic commercial environments.
