An impressive late 18th-century Italian copperplate engraving depicting the martyrdom of Saint Andrew the Apostle, after the celebrated Baroque composition by Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri). Rich in dramatic narrative and classical architectural detail, the scene portrays the saint surrounded by Roman soldiers and grieving onlookers in a masterfully rendered composition characteristic of the Italian Grand Tour era.
This finely executed engraving was drawn by T. Tofanelli and engraved in Rome by Joannes Folo, dated 1799, as inscribed within the plate. The work exhibits exceptional linework and tonal depth, with intricate crosshatching throughout the figures, drapery, and architectural elements. The composition reflects the influence of classical antiquity and Baroque religious storytelling, making it both a historically significant and visually striking decorative work.
Presented unframed and printed on laid paper with visible age-related character and patina consistent with its late 18th-century origin.
Inscriptions include:
* “Divi Andreae Apost. Martyrium”
* “Joannes Folo sculpsit Romae Anno 1799”
* “Domenicus Zampieri vulgo Domenichino pinx.”
* “Tofanelli delin.”
