An exceptional art cabinet crafted in the 18th century, conceived as a tribute to the opulence and refinement of the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. Made from an oak base venereed with exotic woods, the most expensive construction combination.
The cabinet is fully decorated on all sides with intricate marquetry, displaying floral vases, birds and butterflies very common for dutch golden age marquetry. Including geometric compositions and refined ornamental inlays, further enhanced with delicate inlaid details.
At its heart lies a remarkable interior “mirror chamber,” an architectural composition of columns and perspectival elements designed to create a sophisticated trompe l’oeil effect. This theatrical interior recalls the prized cabinets of curiosity of the 17th century, intended to display precious objects in an illusionistic and intimate setting. Notably, a cleverly concealed drawer is hidden behind the staircase of the theatre adding an element of intrigue and refinement.
The cabinet features a total of twelve drawers, all constructed in oak with traditional dovetail joinery, underscoring the high level of craftsmanship.
The cabinet stands on an elegant and powerful base with finely turned legs in solid oak. Based on construction and wear, this base is most likely of 17th-century origin, suggesting that the piece incorporates earlier elements, while the upper cabinet was refined or reworked in the 18th century in keeping with historicizing tastes.
A rare and highly decorative work, embodying the enduring fascination with Golden Age artistry, and offering both historical depth and striking visual presence.
During its long life various repairs and replacements have been done to this piece. repairs to the wood and marquetry. Also the hinges and lock have been replaced somewhere during the last 125 years.
