French painter, sculptor, engraver, James Coignard was born in Tours in 1925. He lived and worked in Antibes, the Maritime Alps and died in 2008.
With the development of a new etching technique using carborundum, etching then became central to James Coignard's work. At the same time, his career took off internationally.
During the 1980's, Coignard spent his time between Paris and the French Riviera and took an interest in artist's books and publishing issues. He was now exhibiting all over the world and is acknowledged as one of the greatest painter-etchers of his time.
