This newspaper front page, dated Tuesday, April 16, 1912, marks an event that touched the world. It took place late at night on Sunday, April 14 when the most luxurious, technically advanced passenger ship ever built hit a wall of ice just off the edge of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. At 11:40 p.m. nearly all passengers were asleep. But less than three hours later, Titanic slid below the black ocean surface, taking more than 1500 souls with it.
The news of such a massive loss of life must have hit hard in this city, one almost destroyed just six years before. Modern historians estimate that more than 3,000 people died from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the catastrophic fires that followed it.
Although the Titanic disaster happened thousands of miles away in the North Atlantic Ocean, the newspaper relied on a relay chain that transformed Morse code distress signals from the sea into a West Coast front-page headline within hours.
There was also a time zone advantage. When the Titanic went completely under at 2:20 AM Ship Time on Monday, April 15, it was only 10:18 PM Sunday night in San Francisco. This time gap allowed Chronicle editors to intercept late-breaking wire updates, change their layouts, and print the grim reality of the loss of life on the Tuesday morning front page on offer here.
Before radio, before television and the Internet, this sheet is also testament to the Chronicle’s team working nonstop as information came in, dedicated to bringing this breaking news to their subscribers in the most immediate fashion.
