This traditional head armor originated in Central Asia and was widely used across Persia and the Mughal Empire of India. Based on its design elements and construction, this example typically dates to the 18th or early 19th century. However, it may represent instead a late 19th-century or an early 20th-century ceremonial reproduction.
The helmet begins with a hemispherical, single-piece hammered steel skull cap. The surface is hand-engraved with human figures as well as intricate floral arabesques, foliage, and animals common in Islamic decorative arts. The lower rim includes a calligraphic band.
A distinct, spear-like finial affixed to the apex of the dome serves as both decoration and defense. Providing further security for the wearer, the vertical steel bar running down the front is a retractable face protector. It can be moved up or down and secured into place with a retaining screw or bracket.
Once part of a pair, the small tube-shaped fixture attached next to the nasal guard is designed to hold decorative feathers or horsehair plumes during battle or ceremonies.
A hanging neck and shoulder chainmail guard, or aventail, composed of linked metal rings is attached along the bottom perimeter of the steel bowl.
These helmets were structurally designed to deflect slashing sword blows away from a warrior's head. While highly decorative examples were crafted for high-ranking military commanders or ceremonial royal guards, many identical pieces were heavily produced in regional armor centers like Lahore during the late 19th century for international collectors and local parades.
