19th Century Louis Philippe Walnut Bookcase is a handsome and well-proportioned bookcase in richly figured walnut, retaining its original antique rolled glass and brass hardware throughout. The upper section opens behind two glazed doors to four adjustable shelves, the exceptional walnut figuring carrying through the cornice and stiles with a depth and warmth that only genuine age produces. The lower base offers nine drawers in graduating depths, a long shallow drawer at top fitted with brass ring pulls, followed by four rows of paired drawers each retaining their original brass escutcheons. The overall patina is rich and consistent, reflecting nearly two centuries of careful use.
Unusually shallow for a bookcase of this height and presence, the footprint fits naturally between windows, along a narrow wall, or in an entry hall, bringing the full architectural weight of a grand French antique to spaces that rarely accommodate one.
The Louis Philippe period, spanning 1830 to 1848, represented a conscious turning away from the excesses of 18th century French decorative arts toward a furniture tradition rooted in restraint, proportion and the inherent beauty of exceptional wood. The natural grain and warm depth of richly figured walnut was valued above gilding and ornament. Hardware was simple and beautifully considered, architectural lines clean and assured. A tradition that trusted the material to speak for itself, and that sensibility translates with ease into contemporary interiors, where the warmth, proportion and quiet confidence of Louis Philippe furniture feel entirely at home.
Circa: 1840s
