This nearly seven-foot-high work is an original theatrical three-sheet poster for the 1946 screwball comedy “She Wrote the Book.” These large-format advertisements were primarily used for larger theater lobbies or exterior display boards. They were typically printed in two separate sections meant to be aligned during mounting, as shown on linen in this piece.
Featuring a vibrant Golden Age stone lithograph illustration style, the poster captures the slapstick and glamorous dualities of the plot. It highlights the film's primary cast, directors, and creators under the historic Universal Presents banner. At the bottom right, the code 46/594 designates its release information tracked by the National Screen Service (NSS), specifically indicating a film certified for the year 1946.
The film’s story follows Jane Featherstone (Joan Davis), a shy, "plain-Jane" calculus professor from a quiet Midwestern college. She travels to New York on behalf of a colleague who has secretly authored a scandalous, steamy best-selling novel titled “Always Lulu.” After arriving, a sudden bump to the head leaves Jane with amnesia, leading her to believe that she is the real, provocative author. High-society hijinks, a media circus, and romantic mix-ups immediately ensue.
The cast includes Joan Davis, a celebrated physical comedienne and early television pioneer, along with Jack Oakie co-starring as the energetic promotional agent navigating her amnesia antics. Supporting performers include legendary character actors Mischa Auer, Kirby Grant, and Jacqueline de Wit, as well as a young Gloria Stuart, who is best known decades later as the elder Rose in 1997's “Titanic.”
The film was directed by Charles Lamont, a prolific director behind many of Universal's foundational comedies, and distributed by Universal Pictures. High impact, and all in fun from an earlier, perhaps more innocent time.
