Elegant two-section Japanese kasane isho-dansu, a stackable clothing or kimono chest from the late Meiji to early Taishō period, probably around 1910. This type of tansu was traditionally used for storing kimono, textiles, and personal belongings.
Dimensions: height 101.5 cm, width 109.5 cm, depth 45.5 cm.
The chest consists of two separate sections that are placed on top of each other and can be handled using the side carrying handles. The layout is spacious and practical: four large drawers for textiles or clothing, with a smaller upper compartment containing one small drawer and a hinged door. Behind this door are two additional small inner drawers, ideal for smaller objects, documents, or accessories. A key is also present, allowing the piece to be locked.
The tansu has a deep reddish-brown lacquer finish with a warm sheen and a beautifully visible wood grain. The black iron hardware is richly detailed, with round lock plates, decorative corner fittings, strong handles, and large side carrying handles. The combination of warm lacquer, dark metalwork, and clear functional layout gives the piece a strong yet refined presence.
A highly usable Japanese storage piece for a contemporary interior: beautiful as a linen chest, sideboard, low cabinet, or storage piece in a living room, bedroom, shop, or gallery interior. Thanks to its two-section construction, the chest remains practical to move while visually offering the presence of a large and characterful Japanese cabinet.
In very beautiful condition, with light signs of age and use. Solid, functional, and highly decorative.
