A vibrant 8-inch Italian art pottery ashtray/ catchall featuring a bold lava glaze texture and a hand-painted geometric sunburst motif. This piece perfectly encapsulates the bold, experimental spirit of 1960s Italian ceramics popularized by Aldo Londi and Bitossi.
The tray is finished in a thick, mottled glaze, often referred to in the MCM world as "Fat Lava" style, with a vibrant citron-yellow ground. The central sunburst and compass design are hand-painted in deep emerald teal and burnt sienna. The heavy, textured application of the glaze gives the piece a wonderful tactile quality and a Brutalist aesthetic.
Marked "Italy" on the reverse, this design is closely attributed to the mid-century export work of Fratelli Fanciullacci or Alvino Bagni. In excellent vintage condition, this large-scale piece makes a commanding accent on a coffee table or sideboard.
