GEORG KLIMT
Georg was the brother of Gustav Klimt and Ernst Klimt. After completing his apprenticeship, he studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. From 1897 onward, Klimt exhibited his works, based on both his own designs and those of other artists, at decorative arts exhibitions held at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. He designed several high-quality Secessionist relief panels, as well as the bronze doors for the main entrance of the Vienna Secession, built in 1898 according to the plans of Joseph Maria Olbrich.
The eighth Secession exhibition in 1900 gave Klimt the opportunity to become acquainted with furniture and decorative art objects designed by the Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife. He was particularly impressed by their finely crafted objects and subsequently created several exceptional reliefs. Although these works reflect the influence of these renowned artists, they were executed in Klimt’s own elegant Viennese style. Many of Georg Klimt’s reliefs were commissioned as decorative panels and incorporated into furniture produced by some of Vienna’s finest cabinetmakers of the time, such as Michael Niedermoser, Fritz Nagel, and August Ungethüm.
