A striking pair of framed antique Parian bas relief plaques by Royal Copenhagen, produced circa 1870–1890 and cast from original marble carvings by celebrated Danish neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844). Elegantly presented in giltwood frames with deep cobalt blue velvet matting, these plaques create a dramatic contrast that highlights the delicate white relief work and classical subject matter.
The reliefs depict Thorvaldsen’s famed allegorical compositions Night and Day. The Night plaque portrays Night personified drifting peacefully through the sky with closed eyes, accompanied by the sleeping figures of Sleep and Death in her embrace. The Day plaque depicts Day moving energetically across the heavens, gazing toward a torch-bearing child symbolizing sunlight and illumination. Together, the plaques embody the balance between rest and renewal, darkness and light — quintessential themes of the Neoclassical period.
Perfect for English Traditional, Neoclassical, Regency, or Grandmillennial interiors, these framed plaques make an elegant statement in a study, library, hallway, or formal sitting room.
